By season’s end – rather later than this last photo – the fly paper was pretty heavily populated with little fellas who were in the wrong place at the right time. ![]() I used clear packaging tape at both ends – to hold the fly strip in place, and also to cover the externally exposed stretches of fly paper so that my hair and other things would not stick to it, if I got too close. The idea was that flies and moths would go banging around the light as usual, but this time there would be a certain chemical Someone there to greet them. My way of adding the fly strip was to make two cuts in one end, for the start and end of the fly strip, and also two cuts toward the other end, to loop the fly strip through and back. In that space, I added a fly strip, the kind that came in a box of four for $3. The box was big enough to fit over the existing shade with some space to spare. My backup solution was to make selective cuts in an Amazon cardboard box. So now I found myself obliged to create a backup solution in my layered defense. There was a window screen in place, and it was supposed to stop them, but it didn’t fit right and anyway some were so tiny as to wiggle through it. The problem was that, in warm weather, the light from the lap attracted bugs. ![]() To this burgeoning collection, we now add a brief commentary on the fly strip shade for that selfsame brass lamp. Most memorable in this regard, perhaps, are the posts on plastic-eating microbes and cement in a lamp base. But on occasion, we branch out into firsthand explorations of non-computing hardware. This usually means long slogs through software tech. ![]() Here at RW’s Latest, we strive to bring you the best in cutting-edge science. ![]()
